Il est proche de l'ancien premier ministre Taksin qui a été renversé par un coup d'état militaire en 2006. Les protestants -le PAD ou parti pour la démocratie- réprésentant la gauche est mené principalement par des bourgeois urbains. Ils pronent une voie démocratique menée par des élites, à chacun d'apprécier.
